Another quick puzzle for those Coffee Shop moments. You know, that time when you need to stop, rest and grab a quick coffee – but you need to keep your children focused on something more meaningful than mobile phone game.
Well, here’s a Quick Cafe Challenge!
This one focuses on getting the children to think through multiple possibilities and to reason out which would be the most effective. This is problem-solving and mathematical reasoning.
You will need a napkin or scrap of paper and a pencil. Draw a 4×4 grid and add a smiley face on the second square along the top like this:
Draw three more smiley faces on the grid, but you must make sure that no two faces are in the line (horizontal, vertical or diagonal).
To make this easier, let your children practice by placing sugar packets on the squares until they find a good combination.
Here is the solution:
If your children find the solution quickly, ask them to create a new version of the same puzzle by placing the first smiley face in a different square. Alternatively, they could experiment with more faces on a larger grid – what if they worked on a 5 by 5
